The Importance Of Multivitamins And Vitamins For Women

Whether you're trying to have a baby, already pregnant, going through menopause or worried about osteoporosis, it's worthwhile for you as a woman to consider the importance taking a multivitamin to create and maintain optimal health. But why would you want to take a supplement if you can get all your nutrients from your diet? Nutritionists say it is possible? and preferred? to get all your nutrients from the food you consume. And in a perfect world, this would be true for everybody.

But it's not a perfect world. Today's world finds people in fast-paced, hectic and stressed lifestyles. It has become harder for people to eat healthy, nutritionally balanced meals, and even more so to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly every day.

This is especially true for women, who are often trying to juggle family, career, homeschooling, education, other relationships, housework and more. In order to achieve good health and to prevent stress, fatigue, infections and disease, women need to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they require. Yet for most women in most societies, a diet alone just won't cut it. This is why taking a multivitamin or a combination of the most important vitamins and minerals is so beneficial for most women.

A multivitamin will ensure you're getting all the recommended daily dosages of vitamins and minerals that are missing from your diet. While a general multivitamin is fine, you can actually find multivitamins specifically tailored to women's needs at different stages in their life, such as pregnancy and the postmenopausal stage.

One particular time for all women to take multivitamin is right before and during pregnancy. Even if you are confident in your healthy eating habits, it's still recommended to take prenatal vitamins, as your body requires even more nutrients to grow a healthy baby? specifically folic acid. Folic acid, or folate, is required not only for healthy tissue growth and red cell formation, but also to prevent birth defects, especially in early pregnancy. Many women today don't get enough folic acid from their diet, and taking a multivitamin with enough folic acid (400 micrograms) is recommended by most doctors.

Another important mineral for women is calcium. Calcium is needed for strong bones and teeth and to prevent osteoporosis later on in life, a condition that affects many postmenopausal women. Many women report not having enough dairy on a regular basis because of either allergies (lactose intolerance) or dietary restrictions. While calcium can be found in other foods such as salmon, green leafy vegetables and soy, it's still difficult to get enough through food alone, which is why a multivitamin containing calcium is so beneficial.

Other important vitamins and minerals for all women include vitamin K, for blood clotting; vitamin C, for tissue growth and repair as well as adrenal function; and iron, for healthy cells and muscles. Another recommendation is the vitamin B complex, which is great for regulating certain bodily functions as well as reducing stress.

While you can certainly take all of these vitamins and minerals on their own, it?s much more convenient for women to take a multivitamin containing all the necessary nutrients in one little package. Make sure you do your research when considering a multivitamin, as not all are created equal. Quality varies, for one thing, as does the amounts of each vitamin and mineral. Further, make sure you select a multivitamin that is best suited to your needs and stage in life. Once you do, you are on your way to a healthier and stronger you.

Improve Your Health with Multivitamins

Multivitamin supplements are an excellent source of the daily recommended allowance of vitamins that you can't get from a good diet alone. Food is no longer as nutritious as it once was. There are fewer farms, and more crops are being grown on less land. Have you heard of any new farms being opened lately? Or an area being cleared to make room for a farm? Probably not. That is why a daily multivitamin is so important. Just take a pill and you have your daily needs in one easy swallow. Multivitamins are the most convenient way to get vitamins into your body that would otherwise be left out. In this article you will learn what multivitamins do for the body and what the consequences of a vitamin deficiency are. After reading this you will understand why it is crucial to supplement your diet with a multivitamin.
Vitamins are food substances that aid your body's essential biochemical reactions. There are thirteen known vitamins that are classified as either fat soluble or water soluble. Fat soluble vitamins can be stored in the body for months and come in the forms A, D, E, and K. Your body is able to store enough water soluble vitamins to last only a few weeks. The nine water soluble vitamins are C, B1, B2, B6, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid.
If you eat a healthy diet with plenty of whole foods and the correct balance of proteins, fats, and carbs, you may be fine. However, if your diet is lacking you should consider investing in a basic multivitamin. The problems that can result from a vitamin deficiency could fill a book. Some of the most basic signs of a deficiency are a greater tendency to feel stressed or sick. Cigarette smoke also depletes vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin E, and selenium, so if you smoke, make sure that your multivitamin contains these ingredients.
Bodybuilders need vitamins to build muscle and burn fat efficiently. Even though 99.9% of the world's population is not bodybuilders, they should still take a multivitamin. Women of child-bearing age, people over age 60, pregnant or breast-feeding women, strict vegetarians, people on weight loss diets, and anyone not eating a balanced diet will all benefit greatly from them. But keep in mind that even if you take a multivitamin, you still need to eat a healthy diet. Foods such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains provide fiber and many other antioxidants not found in any type of pill.
Look for 100% of the daily value for vitamins D, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid, and at least 20 micrograms of vitamin K. A multivitamin should not cost more than a few cents a day. You don't need anything fancy to reap the benefits of daily multivitamin intake. And remember: taking more than 100% of the daily value is not good for you either. In fact, it is harmful because large doses of copper can interfere with your absorption of zinc and vice versa. Large doses of vitamin A and zinc are also worse for you than not taking one at all. I hope that you now understand the basics of multivitamins and will make an educated decision the next time you shop for vitamins.

Multivitamins Help Reduce Risk Of Infection In Diabetes

Multivitamins Help Reduce Risk Of Infection In Diabetes
 by: News Canada
(NC)While many people take multivitamins to promote good health and to help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer, new research shows that a daily multivitamin supplement may also help to optimize the health of people with type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, results in the body not producing enough insulin or the insulin not being used effectively. Insulin helps take sugar from the blood to cells in the body. Too much sugar in the system can result in damage to various parts of the body, like the eyes and the heart.
A recent U.S. study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at the effect of a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement in people between the ages of 45 and 64, one-third of whom had type 2 diabetes. The results showed that those with diabetes who took a supplement were in dramatically better health in terms of fewer infections and days absent from work due to infection, than those with diabetes who did not take a supplement. Infections included things like respiratory infections, flu and gastrointestinal infections.
The researchers concluded that the positive effect on infection reduction was
likely due to the influence of the supplement on any existing nutritional deficiencies the participants had, that were related to poorly controlled diabetes. They suggest that a multivitamin could be of benefit to people who are overweight, have diabetes, who may have poor nutrition or who have underlying diseases.
If you're concerned about not getting an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet on a daily basis, consider taking a daily supplement like Centrum. For more information on vitamin and mineral supplementation, visit astore.amazon.com/best.multivitamins/Centrum.

Customer Reviews
Good content but way too big
For seniors, who sometimes have a hard time swallowing, creating such a big pill seems ill advised. I did not realize that it would be so much bigger than the regular Centrum Silver but it is. I was totally surprised when it took the bottle out of the box. I tried breaking it but it left rough edges which made it equally hard to swallow.
I decided I would call them to complain, which I did. They told me that it had to be big so that it could contain the calcium. They suggested that when you cut the pill, you polish the edges to make it smoother or that you grind it up. I told them that I really was not interested in doing that much work just to take a supplement. I thought that they might offer me, at least, a coupon for regular Centrum but they did not even take my name.
Wyeth, now owned by Pfizer, is apparently not interested in good customer relations. Not only am I advising that you not buy Centrum Silver Ultra Women's supplement, but I am suggesting you do what I am going to do, look for a store brand that has similar contents of regular Centrum Silver, save a few bucks and put that money toward the purchase of a calcium supplement.

Excellent Product
for those of us who are of "certain age." This covers most of the essential vitamin and mineral bases, and you don't have to add too many more supplements beyond calcium and fish oil and maybe CoQ10. Unlike another reviewer, I have had no problem taking this capsule, and I do not find it to be over-sized. Amazon's price is right. I think it's a good deal in every respect.

Simply the best Women's Multi
My wife shopped multi-vitamins very hard and these have the best overall content. Because of the high level of calcium, she is able to take one less calcium supplement which means one less pill to swallow. Overall content is excellent. The best price is right here on Amazon.

quite good
Well balanced formula, no preformed vitamin A; it gives more energy without any troubled stomach, cravings or increased appetite (which I always get when taking vitamins).

Great price on these supplements
My wife swears by these vitamin supplements, but doesn't like the price at the local stores. Shopping on Amazon saved her $20-30 vs. prices in the local vitamin stores. Compared to some other online stores, we saved money here. Won't go retail for these vitamins again.

Large but GREAT5

I do "HATE" large vitamins, so I started a fight when my pediatrician/husband bought them for me... Now, I'm online trying to purchase more.

CONS: It's true, they're on the big side. But strangely, I don't have any problems swallowing them (I did with other ones). Also, they leave an aftertaste--as another reviewer said. But it goes away easily (juice, cracker, etc), and I usually take them with meals to improve absorption.

PROS: They're easily digestible (I didn't have any of the sickness or heartburn suggested), it's once a day, and above all, it's all NATURAL--which is important for me.

THE POINT: I didn't find any natural vitamins that were as easy to take.

If you want any regular pre-natal vit, I'd go for the prescription ones: You take them once daily. They are small, tasteless, safe and very-very affordable.
Not only for those Pregnant or trying to concieve....PCOS sufferers here's your supplement!!5
I suffer from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) which causes infertility and has a multitude of syptoms and other conditions associated: obesity, diabetes, cysts on ovaries, infertility, either severe periods or no periods, and also an over production of Testosterone leading to excess hair in places like a woman's chin, while hair loss is also part of it. It's easily treated with medication and healthy diet, when caught early. When caught early the fear of infertility is mitigated somewhat.

Since I'm now medicated and starting to move into a healthy diet and my health is in order to the point where I am fertile. I am not intending on getting pregnant any time soon, nor have I ever had a child. But when I was looking for supplements to compliment my more healthy regime, I found out as a PCOS sufferer I had special needs such as an increase in a few vitamins more than others. I didn't want to sit there taking 8 pills in a day, so I was looking for an all-in-one remedy (a multivitamin) which met my needs, such as an increase in biotin, folic acid, selenium, vitamin E...there are a few more, but these were the most vital. Since PCOS is directly related with fertility and when I looked at prenatal vitamins ---prenatal vitamins were basically the remedy I was looking for.

After deciding I needed to find a prenatal vitamin as they are in the range of supplements I'm looking for, I searched reviews on baby websites, about three of them. Rainbow Light was hands down the most popular of them all. I decided to give them a chance after reading the reviews, going to the official site, and also looking carefully at their supplemental precentage and ingredients. It met my needs and then some. I was then concerned on the pill intake. I'm not one to schedule my life around my pills or vitamins, so I wanted to find a one-a-day prenatal vitamin. Bless you, Rainbow Light!!

I have all I need to compliment and aid in managing my PCOS even if it's mainly directed to those pregnant or looking to be pregnant. This is the best product out there for me and my condition and I do recommend any other PCOS sufferers to think of adding this vitamin to your regime.

I've also complimented this with Nordic Naturals Complete Omega 3-6-9 and Vitamin Shoppe's Psyllium Husk with Acidophilus. The Vitamin Shoppe product is used because I am on a high protein diet considering I'm allergic to gluten and need to eat low carbohydrates. It's a God send in keeping me regular.

To get back to Prenatal One...this is not only for the pregnant ladies or those trying to get pregnant. It will be beneficial to any woman, it's easy on the stomach. It is daunting to swallow such a big pill, I think only of the benefits and gulp. ^_^
Love these!5
This is my first time taking a prenatal vitamin, so I have nothing to compare my experience to...but I have to say that I love these vitamins! I spent a lot of time reading reviews for different brands/types of prenatal vitamins, before deciding on these. I love the fact that they're all natural, & made from actual food/plants rather than synthetics. And I love the fact that they haven't added any unnecessary dyes, or artificial ingredients, etc.

From my research, this prenatal vitamin seems to have just about all of the nutrients that you'll need to have: before, during, and after pregnancy, (while breast feeding). Except that you'll have to get extra Calcium from another source, and if you really want to play it safe you can always increase your iron intake...but these are minor details. I think that the price is great...even if they are a little more expensive than some of the other prenatal vitamins, they are worth it for the quality, & can you really put a price on having a healthy baby? :)

I have been taking these vitamins for a month now, and I haven't suffered from ANY side-effects, at all. Nor have I noticed an after-taste, or any other kind of adverse side effect. They haven't given me heartburn. And they don't cause me to feel sick, or nauseous...which I was worried about, since a lot of women complain that prenatal vitamins *in general* make them feel nauseous. But I haven't had any problems, what-so-ever. And these vitamins contain natural ingredients that will actually help with your morning sickness...so that's a bonus! :)

They are a little on the large side, but with all of the healthy nutrients packed into them, I don't really see that as being a bad thing! Plus, as far as I can tell...most prenatal vitamins are large, unless you're taking multiple smaller doses each day. If that's what you're looking for...Rainbow Light has another prenatal vitamin that you can take 6 times a day, & they are smaller. But I haven't had any trouble swallowing these. Some people have mentioned that they have an easier time taking them with Orange Juice, but I haven't had a problem taking them, with whatever I happen to be drinking at the time. And I've taken them with & without food, so that hasn't been an issue either...they don't make me feel sick, either way.

They also don't prevent me from sleeping, & the bottom line is that I would highly recommend these, since they have made the whole experience a positive one for me! On a side note, my husband has been taking the Men's One a Day multi-vitamins, also by Rainbow Light, ever since we decided to conceive...since they promote a healthy reproductive system in men. They're a lot smaller than the prenatal vitamins, obviously...& he also hasn't suffered from any side effects. So I would recommend those as well, for those of you who are planning on conceiving anytime in the near future!

Better than what is in the stores5
I love these vitamins. For years I have been taking Centrum and One a day w/o really feeling the effects of them. Then after reading The Natural Cures I learned that most of the vitamins on the shelf are synthetic and you don't absorb them. I choose this one b/c although it wasn't organic like he recommended it was all natural. The first day I tool these I felt a huge difference. W/i a week I was more alert, had more energy, better memory and no menstrual pains. I have recommended this vitamin to all my friends. I love it!
The BEST!5
These are the best ever, they actually make you feel better and with more energy. I absolutely love them and wouldn't take any other. They are all natural and have extra B vitamins as well as others. FYI, they are large pills, they don't taste the best and just a word of caution, never take them on an empty stomach, it could make you nauseous. Remember, they will make you feel wonderful for the rest of the day!!!
The Best Vitamins5
I have tried a lot of different multi-vitamins on the market. Many of them made me very sick even when eating food. Some other vitamins like GNC's were so hard to swallow and they tasted horrible.
Rainbow Light vitamins didn't make me feel sick at all. They aren't hard to swallow and the best part is you only have to take 1 a day. I can't say enough good things about these vitamins. I LOVE THEM!!! Both my hubby and I use them.

Customer Reviews

One of the best with perhaps one fatal flaw...4
As a chemist, I am very aware that some forms of vitamins are better absorbed than others. Rainbow Light's Men's One Multi is very good.

I must start off by saying that no multivitamin is perfect. There is no multivitamin out there that has all vitamins and minerals in the ideal forms, nor is there is a multivitamin that will have all your daily nutritional needs in every single area. Supplementation from another source is still going to be necessary... although a good multivitamin can really cut down the cost because if it's a good multi, then one will not have to supplement much.

First, I want to start off saying that it boggles my mind that Amazon does not provide the nutrition label for any of the supplements that they sell. One has to either go to the store and find the supplement, or find it on another website. Amazon needs to fix this problem.

Now, about this multivitamin. The things I really like about this multivitamin is that it is 100% natural, and a food-based multivitamin. Nothing in this vitamin is synthetic. It doesn't contain any objectionable ingredients like titanium dioxide, nor does it contain any fillers.

Another nice thing about this vitamin is that it contains probiotics, vegetable extract, saw palmetto, lycopene, etc.

Probably the best feature of this vitamin is that while most vitamin brands use cheap forms of minerals, this multi is mainly good with the only exceptions being calcium and magnesium. Other than calcium and magnesium, all minerals are in their most absorb-able form, either as the citrate form or the amino acid chelate form. The forms you do not want to see are oxide forms of minerals, or the carbonate form for calcium. Unfortunately this multi does have calcium as calcium carbonate and magnesium as magnesium oxide. But the fortunate thing about it, is that the amounts of calcium and magnesium it uses are very negligible, so one will still want to supplement calcium and magnesium elsewhere, and from there get one that contains either calcium citrate/malate (not calcium carbonate, eggshell calcium, or coral calcium) along with magnesium citrate.

This multivitamin also contains vitamin A as 50% beta-carotene, which is the safest form of vitamin A. I would prefer that all of the vitamin A would be in the beta-carotene form, but as I said earlier, no multi is perfect.

Selenium is in its active form as selenomethionine, but unfortunately the label doesn't state whether or not it is in the L-selenomethionine form or the D-selenomethionine form. I am assuming it's L-selenomethionine, but anyone who has taken an organic chemistry or biochemistry course would know that the chirality of a molecule can make all the difference in the world. But this multi contains 200mcg of selenium, which the latest research says is the optimal amount of selenium to get the most health benefits.

To me, none of the short comings of this vitamin are really that big of a deal, especially since I haven't really found anything much better. Most of the minerals are in their ideal form, which is fantastic, it has vegetable extracts, and it has at least 50% of vitamin A in the beta-carotene form.

Now, as I said earlier, there is still some supplements that will need to be taken to overcome the short comings of this multi. This multivitamin contains 800IU of vitamin D, which according to my doctor, the average adult should be taking about 2000IUs daily. So I supplement vitamin D to get the other 1200IU. Another thing, is this vitamin contains negligible amounts of calcium & magnesium (which in this case, this is good because calcium & magnesium are in their undesirable forms), so one may want to find a calcium & magnesium supplement, in their ideal forms.

Other than that, everything else in this multi-vitamin is really good and it is rare to find a multi of this quality.

Saying everything I just, there is something that can make or break everything about this vitamin. And that is that this multi is in a tablet form. The ideal form of a vitamin is either liquid or capsule because tablets can be hard to digest, and in some cases, some manufacturers have been found that their vitamins don't dissolve fast enough (and yes, this even happens to expensive brands that you'd find in a health food store).

To find this out, get a glass of vinegar and heat it to about 98 degrees farenheit (approximately the same temp as the human body) and let this tablet sit in there for about 30 minutes. If it dissolves, it should dissolve just fine in the stomach, if it doesn't, then it is junk. I haven't done this, but every good thing about this vitamin would be wasted if it doesn't break down.

Great Multivitamin for Men!5
I ordered these for my husband, when we decided that we wanted to try to have a baby in the near future. I'd ordered the Rainbow Light prenatal vitamins for myself, and when I saw that they had a multivitamin for men that promotes a healthy reproductive system...I thought that it was worth a try! Especially since we'd been looking for a good one-a-day multivitamin, regardless of our conception plans. So, it took a little while for them to arrive in the mail, & even though they were listed as being in stock, it took a couple of days before they mailed them out to us...

However, with that aside...it was worth the wait! The price is great, for the quality. They're a little more expensive than some other brands, but the saying is true...you get what you pay for! These vitamins are all natural, and they are made from food/plants rather than from synthetics...which is great! They have the d-alpha instead of the dl-alpha...which is really hard to find in a muti-vitamin these days, (and what that means is that it contains the natural form of vitamin E, and not the synthetic form that most multivitamins have).

It's also low in iron, which is IMPORTANT for men, especially since iron can cause a whole slew of health problems for men. It doesn't contain any preservatives or dyes, or other unnecessary ingredients, and yet it contains a lot of the essential ingredients! My Husband has no problem taking them each day, and he hasn't had any side effects what-so-ever. He said that he would highly recommend them...and we both highly recommend the Rainbow Light brand, on a whole! We will continue to buy this brand, again and again and again. :)
One of the few multi's with natural, not synthetic, E4
It's getting harder to find a multi with d-alpha instead of dl-alpha.

This one has d-alpha, not the synthetic E.
